An Old Favorite Dazzles Again

We are excited to share another post from Guest Crusader Rebecca. Below, Rebecca shares one of her favorite cupcake/bakery shops, from her neck of the woods, down in Virginia.

I love Shirlington Village in Arlington, VA.  It is a very quaint street, two blocks long, but chock full of fantastic restaurants, shops, and entertainment. One of my very favorite places to grab a snack, has always been Best Buns Bread Company. Known for their fresh baked breads, delicious breakfast sandwiches, and rotating schedule of specialty treats (including the BEST Pumpkin Cake Cookies), I was pleasantly surprised to see that they also baked cupcakes!

Now these are some serious, extremely large, cupcakes. At about 3 inches across, these sweet treats are flavorful and some of the best cupcakes I have ever had. I decided to sample three flavors – Triple Lemon, Red Velvet, and Chocolate Toffee. And since these are such large treats, I was fortunate to have wonderful BSO staff members to share these treats with me, including Crusader Elisa.

The Triple Lemon was a very heavy, moist and dense cupcake. It was a lemon cake with shredded lemon pieces, lemon glaze, and lemon butter cream. This cupcake was also topped with candied lemon rind and had a very fresh lemon taste, no hint of artificial flavoring. It was delicious and tart, but refreshing at the same time. This cupcake is something every lemon lover NEEDS to try, and I enjoyed it so much!

The Red Velvet was an excellent rendition of traditional red velvet, topped with a cream cheese frosting. The cake was very flavorful and not overly sugary. It was sweet and light and the perfect complement to the rich cream cheese frosting.

Last, but certainly not least, was the Chocolate Toffee cupcake. I am a big fan of chocolate cake but rarely find a shop-bought one that I enjoy, so this was a special treat for me. The cake had a rich chocolate flavor, but was still light and moist. The butter cream was toffee flavored and you could taste the caramel, with hints of a burnt flavor, but still smooth and sweet. The crushed toffee on the top was an added textural bonus. All in all, this was a fantastic cupcake!

So, if you ever find yourself down in Virginia, make sure to check out Best Buns and all their baked treats!

  1. These – seriously – are some of the best cupcakes around DC. And since they’re from a full-service bakery, not a “cupcake” shop, they are somewhat of a hidden secret in Shirlington. Love!
